Pineapples are in this summer! These fruits are everywhere, and I’m kicking myself because a couple of years before Rowan’s first birthday, his party was themed: PARTY LIKE A PINEAPPLE.

I couldn’t find any pineapples anywhere. When I did find some pineapples, they were cartoonish and not what I was going for. I gave up looking for things to buy, decorated with pineapples instead, made Rowan’s shirt and invite, and the party was done. Want to throw your own Party Like a Pineapple Party? Follow along below!
Invitations
I always like to start the party planning with invitations. For Rowan’s first birthday, I designed them myself in Photoshop Elements. I found free digital scrapbook paper with some fun fonts, took a photo of Rowan for the back, and sent it off to Costco to print. It may not be as nice as Etsy or Zazzle invitations, but it was okay.
If you don’t want to make your own, I found a few pineapple invites that are ready for use:
Decorations
Unfortunately, I didn’t get any photos of my decorations. The person in charge of photos ended up not feeling well and I missed my chance to snap some before the party began. That’s life, right?
I got most of my decorations at the dollar store. You can find balloons, streamers, and other solid party decor there for the low, low price of $1. And then of course, the grocery store for pineapples!
Smash Cake
Not going to lie, but I am pretty proud of the smash cake I made for Rowan’s first birthday.
I baked the cake (from a box) in two small round ramekins . Then I put buttercream frosting on the top of one round cake before stacking the second on top. After I frosted the cake, I used chocolate chips for the eyes, a red vine for the mouth, and the top of a pineapple we had cut.
Everyone else had cupcakes with yellow cupcake holders and green frosting.
Food
I went simple and just had chicken teriyaki rice bowls, ramen salad, veggie platter, chips and salsa, applesauce, and of course pineapples.
Pinterest Party? Don’t worry, just have fun
Overall, don’t worry too much about the details. Remember when a kid’s birthday was just cake and ice cream? That is still okay. The memories of the party will be filled with fun, laughter, and all your favorite people.
I know that’s what I remember most about Rowan’s first birthday.
Now excuse while I go plan his second birthday…

That little smash cake!! So, so cute—and I totally would have made it from a box, too. No time for baking from scratch when you’re in party coordinating mode. 😉
