We moved back to Orange County after seven years in Fresno in 2022. My husband and I grew up here, and now we’re rediscovering all the kid-friendly gems OC has to offer through the eyes of our children. Whether you’re a local mom or just visiting Southern California, there is a lot to do. Here are our favorite things to do with kids in Orange County.
1. Ride Bikes on the Balboa Boardwalk
One of our favorite family activities is riding bikes on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. The ocean breeze, stunning views, and lively atmosphere make it the perfect spot to spend a morning or afternoon. Don’t have bikes? No problem! There are plenty of rental shops where you can grab bikes or even surreys (those adorable four-person pedal carts). Pro tip: Stop by the Balboa Fun Zone for a spin on the Ferris wheel. You can even take a ferry ride to Balboa Island for an iconic Balboa Bar.
2. Explore the Beaches

Summer in OC isn’t complete without a trip to the beach. Whether you prefer the bustling vibe of Huntington Beach or the laid-back charm of Laguna, there’s a stretch of sand for every family. We love building sandcastles, splashing in the waves, and searching for shells. If you’re looking for calm waters, Baby Beach in Dana Point is a hidden gem perfect for young children. For adventurous families, the tide pools at Crystal Cove State Park or the beautiful beaches of Corona Del Mar are must-visit spots. Pack a picnic and enjoy your day by the Pacific Ocean.
3. Visit Playgrounds and Parks
Orange County is home to some incredible playgrounds that kids (and parents) will love. A few of our favorites include:

- Lighthouse Park (Newport Beach): With a scenic view and plenty of space for kids to run around, this park is a great place for a family outing.
- Bluebird Park (Laguna Beach): This whimsical park has climbing structures, slides, and a gorgeous ocean view.
- Adventure Playground (Irvine): Let your kids get messy with mud pits, zip lines, and creative play areas.
- Castle Park (Fullerton): Featuring a medieval-themed playground, this spot is a hit with imaginative little ones.
For a great family day, head to the Orange County Great Park, where you can ride the iconic Great Park Balloon and explore play areas, and walking paths. It’s the perfect place for a full day of fun.
4. Check Out the OC Zoo
Located in Irvine Regional Park, the OC Zoo is a great option for a low-key day out. Kids can see native animals like black bears, mountain lions, and coyotes, and there’s even a petting zoo for hands-on fun. Afterward, take a ride on the park’s train or rent a paddleboat on the lake. This spot is perfect for parents looking to mix fun and education for their kiddos.

Another hidden gem is Zoomars at River Street Ranch in San Juan Capistrano. This petting zoo offers pony rides, guinea pig feeding, and a small train ride. It’s a charming spot where younger kids can interact with animals and have a great time.
5. Discover Science and Art

- Discovery Cube (Santa Ana): This interactive science museum offers hands-on exhibits that kids of all ages will enjoy. The Dino Quest and Rocket Lab are always a hit.
- Pretend City Children’s Museum (Irvine): A fantastic place for young children to explore and engage in imaginative play through interactive exhibits.
- Bowers Kidseum (Santa Ana): A cultural and art-focused museum where kids can get creative with hands-on activities and explore exhibits from around the world.
6. Explore Theme Parks and Amusement Parks

Orange County is home to some of the best theme parks on the West Coast. A family trip to the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim is a must, especially if it’s your first visit. Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure offer plenty of attractions and activities for kids of all ages. For thrill-seekers, Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park has roller coasters, family-friendly rides, and a charming old-west vibe. If you’re looking for water park fun, check out Great Wolf Lodge in Garden Grove or Knott’s Soak City during summer.
7. Seasonal Fun
OC is full of seasonal events that make each time of year special:

- Spring: Visit Tanaka Farms in Irvine for strawberry picking or enjoy the blooming flowers at local botanical gardens.
- Summer: Don’t miss the OC Fair for rides, games, and funnel cake. Beach days along the Pacific Coast Highway are also a favorite.
- Fall: Pumpkin patches and hayrides are everywhere, but we’re partial to Irvine Park Railroad’s Pumpkin Patch.
- Winter: Take the kids ice skating at one of OC’s outdoor rinks or visit the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade.
8. Take a Family Hike

Get some fresh air and enjoy OC’s natural beauty with kid-friendly hikes. Try the trails at Peters Canyon Regional Park or the scenic paths at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, where you might spot marine life. For a historical twist, visit Mission San Juan Capistrano and explore its beautiful gardens and exhibits.
9. Explore Beyond Orange County
Looking to venture out on a road trip? Southern California has so much to offer within a short drive:

- Catalina Island: Take the Catalina Flyer from Newport Beach for a fun boat ride and explore this island’s charm. Rent a golf cart for easy family exploration.
- San Diego Zoo: A world-class zoo perfect for a family vacation.
- Universal Studios Hollywood: Dive into TV shows and movie magic.
- Santa Barbara: A coastal gem for whale watching and beautiful beaches.
- Palm Springs: Relax by the pool or explore Joshua Tree National Park.
