We need to talk about Verity by Colleen Hoover. I just finished the novel, and the letters “WTF” escaped my mouth.

A Twisty Novel That I Couldn’t Put Down
After reading some Goodreads reviews, I learned that people either love or hate Verity by Colleen Hoover. There is no in-between. To me, that’s a sign of a wonderful book.
There is a huge trigger warning for child abuse and domestic violence depictions. Do not read this book if those things are hard for you to consume. No one talks about this trigger warning, and I needed to put one out there. There are also explicit sex scenes, so if that bothers you, walk away.
What is Verity about?
Verity has everything you could want in a good book: a creepy family, a forbidden romance, lots of sex (another content warning), and many plot twists to keep the reader guessing.
In short, Lowen is a broke, struggling writer when she accepts a life-changing job ghostwriting the remaining books of a best-selling series. The author, Verity Crawford, cannot finish due to being in a car accident that she may never recover from.
Lowen temporarily moves into Crawford’s house to learn more about Verity, her writing style, and the series that needs to be completed. While looking through Verity’s office, Lowen finds Verity’s unfinished autobiography. Lowen begins to read the manuscript and discovers Verity’s horrible secrets.
Meanwhile, Lowen starts to fall for Verity’s husband, Jeremy, and they quickly fall into an affair. Lowen is unsure if she should tell Jeremy about the autobiography because she knows it could change everything.
4.5 out of 5 Stars for Verity
Verity is a dark book with unforgivable, flawed characters. Sensitive readers proceed with caution. It is also different from most thrillers I have read, and I appreciated how I just couldn’t put it down.
Verity opens with a terrible accident, leaving someone dead, and our main character, Lowen, is covered with blood, setting the stage for the book’s disturbing tone. The scenes in this book are dramatic and intense, leaving you wondering who the bad guy really is.
Overall, Verity is amazingly twisty, well-written, dark, and unpredictable. This book left me disturbed and questioning everything in my life. I finished the book late at night and watched Dawson’s Creek on Netflix as a palate cleanser before falling asleep.
If you are looking for a way out of a reading rut, try reading Verity. You will probably like this book if you also like unreliable narrators, psychological thrillers, and dark romances.

Frequently Asked Questions About Verity
Is Verity a steamy book?
This is a tricky question because steamy is more of a personal description. What is steamy for one person may not be steamy enough for another. However, Verity does have explicit open-door sex scenes. If you are used to closed-door sex scenes, the book would probably be considered steamy, but if you regularly read open-door scenes, the sex scenes may seem tame.
What is the trigger warning in the book Verity?
Many readers find Colleen Hoover’s Verity deeply unsettling due to the explicit and problematic themes, including attempted murder, homicide, child abuse, car accidents, abortion, physical injuries, and other disturbing elements.
Was Verity turned into a movie?
The book has not been turned into a movie or TV show yet. However, in October 2021, it was announced that the project is currently in development at Amazon Studios, but as of 2023, there is no more information.
