Since we are currently in the middle of a pandemic, I am wearing a face mask whenever I leave my house. My skin has not been happy about my new face accessory, and I have been suffering from a bad case of maskne or mask acne. If you have been breaking out under your mask, you are not alone. Below, I am sharing some skincare products that I have added to my routine in some way to help combat my maskne.
Tips to Fight Mask Acne
First, some tips to help your products do their thing:
- Wash your mask and change it often – I try and use a different mask whenever I leave the house.
- Don’t forget to wash your face every night. I have heard some people say you should wash your face as soon as you get home from work or an outing, but sometimes that just isn’t realistic, especially if you are wearing makeup. So wash your face at night, pandemic or not.
- Drink enough water. Like washing your face, drinking water plays a big role in having good skin. Keep drinking water.
- I usually go foundation free under my mask. It seems like every time I wear foundation under my mask, the breakout is always worse.
- Wash your sheets, pillowcases, towels, and makeup brushes often!
Products I Have Been Using to Fight Mask Acne

Below are the products that I have collected over the last few months to help fight mask acne. I don’t use all of these products every day, but I do use them as needed.
Acne Pimple Patches
For the last couple of years, I have used various pimple patches to help with my hormonal acne during that time of the month. They are a quick, effective way to help heal acne. I believe they work best when the pimple has a white head exposed. The ones that I am currently using are from Amazon. I have also used patches from Mighty Patch (at Target) and COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patches at Ulta.
First Aid Beauty FAB Pharma BHA Acne Spot Treatment
I usually use this First Aid Beauty Acne Spot Treatment on pimples that are either new or steal healing. I think I like this particular spot treatment because it is not drying. You can apply it up to three times a day, but I usually use the product after my daily and nightly skincare routine.
First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads
I don’t love single-use products, but I think these First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads are the exception for me. They are an easy way to exfoliate, are alcohol-free, and were made with sensitive skin in mind. The lactic and glycolic acid help clear acne and pores and brighten dark spots. These pads are also a great product for beginners.
POP Beauty Be Gone! Clarifying Cica Stick
I received the POP Beauty Be Gone! Clarifying Cica Stick in a PR package from CVS Beauty. The stick makes it easy to apply. I like to use it over my zits on the days that I am not wearing foundation. I feel it works best for me on zits starting to form or the ones I accidentally picked. The Clarifying Stick is cooling to the skin and would probably feel great when applied to sunburns.
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
I started using The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% in my morning and night skincare routines recently. If you are looking for a serum that does a lot for your skin, I recommend checking out Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% from the Ordinary. Not only does Niacinamide help treat acne and pigmentation, but it also has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.
MAELOVE The Exfloliater
I try to physically exfoliate my face once a week. MAELOVE offered to send me some products to try out, and I jumped on the chance to use The Exfloliater, a BHA, and clay facial scrub. MAELOVE’s website describes it best.
This deep cleansing exfoliation treatment will help unclog pores, remove impurities, and buff away dead skin cells to give you baby smooth skin.

Ice Cream n Sticky Fingers says
I’ve suffered from horrible maskne since we have been required to wearing a mask on a daily basis. I’m fortunate that I am not stuck wearing one all day but even with the short amount of time I do have to wear one, it’s caused my acne break outs to increase. I have a mask to wear for each day so that I wash the masks after each daily use. I use a face wash with a gentle exfoliating cleanser when I’m in the shower. After my last horrible break out, I purchased an alcohol free witch hazel toner. This has helped some but I’m still struggling. Part of my issue is that I sweat easily. I need to start washing my face after wearing my mask to see if that helps. If not, I’m going to buy a spray that I can spray (something dr pimple popper recommended) on my mask to prevent maskne.
